With recent internal conflicts I have been facing... I am trying to figure out which "battles to fight". When do I speak up, and when do I sink into my seat and let the next blow come?
My Professor, who I appreciate and respect dearly said to me... "Like you know.. just remember the times in history when people did not speak up against the oppressive forces in power, and remember what happened. It is the times when people do speak up that make a difference and evoke change."
That being said, this poem has been stuck in my head on the drive home...
It's was written by Martin Niemöller
"First they came…"
First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
